ROBINSON, William

Memorial: Sacred to the memory of Commodore William Robinson of the Bombay Marines who in the year 1774 commanded a small squadron fitted out by the Bombay Government for the purpose of exploring the coast of the Indian Ocean from the mouth of the Indus to the Persian Gulph a survey which had not been attempted since a similar voyage was undertaken for the same purpose by Nearchus in the time of Alexander and to which Dr Vincent the learned translator of the voyage of Nearchus acknowledges himself to have been much indebted in the performance of that work. Having obtained an honourable independence in the service of the East India company he retired to Abinger Hall in this parish. He died in London March 1803 aged 57 years and is buried in a vault in this church. This simple tribute is offered to his memory by one of those who were indebted to the kindness of his disposition for many of the enjoyments of their childhood and is also intended to fulfill what would have been the wishes of others who can now no longer express them but who would have cordially joined in this record by their sense of his worth as a man and of his service as a friend.

In the same vault also lies interred the body of Mr Richard Rowzier who departed this life the 9th day of May 1767 aged 22 years. Here also lyeth the body of Mrs Elizabeth Rowzier who departed this life June 17th 1785 aged 63 years

Willm Hamilton Esq of Tottenham in the County of Middlesex husband of the above named Mary Hamilton died Sept 29 1800 aged 73 years.

Sacred to the memory of Mary Ann Royston late of Hackhurst farm in this parish, wife of George Royston bailiff to the first and to the present Lord Abinger. In their service she continued with her husband to whom she was deeply attached above 40 years. Faithful to her employer not less kind and first to the poor she was exemplary in all the relations of life. That which she may meet with acceptnace in that place to which all her wishes aspire is the humble hope of her surviving husband and her family and of her Master and Mistress who have placed this stone to her memory. She departed this life May 6th 1854 aged 76 years. Here also lie the remains of the said George Royston who died deeply lamented Jan 5 1859 aged 77 years
